Probus Club of Darwin Inc. is non-profit and non-sectarian. It is non-fundraising. It's objectives are to stimulate thought, interest and participation in activities at a time of life when it is easy to become complacent and self centred.

A GREAT WAY TO DESCRIBE PROBUS

As a Rotarian and now a Probarian I am often asked "What is Probus".
When starting to explain that it is "an Association of active retirees who join together in clubs to provide regular opportunities to keep their minds active, expand their interests and enjoy the fellowship of new friends" you can see their eyes start to glaze over and turn off. Very little opportunity to speak about the Rotary connection.

Probus in our part of the world is very much part of the family of Rotary and when asked by someone "What IS Probus?", I believe that is important for all Rotarians and Probarians to have a ready response, a "one liner" much as a knee jerk reaction. So try this for size:
"Probus is a Rotary sponsored association of clubs promoting healthy ageing in our communities".

Hopefully this will spark some interest, and we can then add something along the lines of "Probus clubs are sponsored by Rotary clubs as part of their commitment to Community Service. These clubs are open to membership of active retirees or people no longer working full time, to provide opportunities to keep their minds active, expand their interests, build new relationships and enjoy the fellowship of new friends."

If speaking with someone as a potential member it may be worthwhile describing some of the activities and interest groups that your Probus Club has, such as Dining Out, Tour Group, Golf, Ten Pin Bowling, etc. Without the support of Rotary clubs, there would be no new Probus clubs formed and we need to keep this connection with the family of Rotary alive and well.
