His talk was entitled “Without Seafarers – No coffee, no clothes, no cars, no Christmas”.
The group was first formed in London in 1857, reached centres in Australia in 1917, finally commencing in Darwin in 2018. Worldwide there are more than 1.89 million seafarers, on
74,000 plus merchant vessels who help shift 10.6 billion tonnes of goods annually. Some of the issues that the seamen face are loneliness, separation for long periods of time from families,
mental illness, abuse, corruption. The Mission helps to provide emotional, spiritual, physical support and to give a sense of community and provide basic necessities when these seamen
come ashore in ports away from homes. |
May 2023 Meeting
Guest speaker Terry Lawler unavailable at the last minute.
Allan Mitchell stepped in at very short notice and gave a great presentation on his recent trip to Japan, partly to walk the Kumano Kodo Trail which is located on the Kii-peninsula.
This 258km route covers the Heian period (794-1185) pilgrimage trail linking three Kumano shrines. At this time emperors and aristocrats sought spiritual solace in nature and mountains,
as pilgrims still do today. Temples and omnipresent Oji-shrines are tucked into bamboo forests, mountain valleys and villages en route. This is a world heritage pilgrimage walk.
Allan also travelled to other centres in Japan, and attended an Anzac Day ceremony.
Many thanks to Allan for his wonderful effort in being our guest speaker for the meeting and giving an insight into the walking trail and adventures along the way. |
